Our take on the state of the region

The future of Bay Area transit is on the November ballot

Author: Bob Allen

Thanks to the people-powered efforts of two successful signature gathering campaigns, the five-county Regional Transit Measure and Proposition H in San Francisco are on the November ballot. Both are crucial to maintaining and restoring the transit service that youth, seniors, people with disabilities, and essential workers rely on for a dignified life.

Without the passage of these two measures, Bay Area bus service and BART will have to make service cuts, raise fares, and close stations, making the region’s public transit unrecognizable. We will live with more traffic, worse air-quality, and communities cut off from each other.

The good news is that polls show Bay Area voters support public transit. Polling results released last month by EMC Research showed that 54% of registered voters support:

  • Preventing major service cuts to bus and BART service
  • Reducing traffic and pollution
  • Funding transit safety, cleanliness, affordability, and reliability
  • Targeted repairs to roads and potholes to support transit

But 54% voter support means we still need an all-out effort to win in November.

Winning in November is the first step in the march to win the transit system we deserve. We hope you will join us.
