Labor is on the march this May Day!
The Labor Movement has some serious momentum going.
Community-labor solidarity campaigns like those in Minneapolis have captured the imagination of millions of Americans. Recent polling shows a fifth consecutive year of strong and growing approval of organized labor, with public support at 68%, which was last reached in the early 1960s.
In 2025, union representation grew by 463,000, with unionization rates for people of color growing faster than for white non-Hispanic workers. The highest unionization levels were among Black workers at 11.4%.
In another promising development, almost 50% of new union growth occurred in Southern states, which have traditionally fought union drives with “right to work” policies. Unions continue to deliver for workers, with members earning a higher median weekly salary ($1,404) compared to non-union workers ($1,174), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
At the same time, workers are confronting extreme anti-union policies under Trump, as well as a corporate class more hostile to economic democracy than ever before.
Corporate power is built on wage suppression, tax evasion, and the privatization of public goods. It is the engine of inequality. It siphons wealth that belongs to working people and delivers it to those who already have the most.
In the Bay Area, oligarchs are waging a campaign to consolidate wealth, political power, and social control. They are building what they call a “technological republic,” a Bay Area where their small group decides whether workers deserve a living wage, if housing is a human right, or if we adequately fund public transit.
This is neoliberalism with the mask off. This is what the government’s assaults on workers’ rights and unions have been building towards: a corporate class so brazen it no longer bothers to hide its contempt for democracy.
They are counting on our isolation. But workers are fighting back with solidarity.
Together, let’s build a Labor Movement that fights alongside communities for a just, sustainable, and equitable world. On May Day, join an action or transit campaign event to show the corporate class our collective power.
The future they want is not inevitable. The future we build together is up to us.
