Event and New Report: The Right to Thrive: Tenant-Led Housing Justice in Vallejo

Author: Chris Schildt

The City of Vallejo is at a crossroads. Out-of-town investors and corporate landlords are creating a cascading crisis of unstable housing, rising rents, and deteriorating living conditions.

In our recent report with the Vallejo Housing Justice Coalition – The Right to Thrive: Tenant-Led Housing Justice in Vallejo, California – we surveyed residents and found:

  • 19% average annual rent increase for renters, amounting to hundreds of dollars a month.
  • 40% of renters report pests, mold, mildew, or plumbing problems landlords won’t fix.
  • 1 in 3 Vallejo residents report significant stress directly caused by high rent.

The survey also found that more than 3 in 4 Vallejo residents – a mix of renters and owners – support rent stabilization, just cause eviction protections, right to counsel, community land trusts, and a tenant’s right to organize.

Tenant protections are basic guardrails that keep neighborhoods strong, fair, and livable for homeowners and renters alike. It’s long overdue for the City of Vallejo to pass local protections for renters.

Join us on Saturday, August 1 for the community release of the report in Vallejo, co-sponsored by the Vallejo Housing Justice Coalition, End Poverty In California, Public Advocates, and Solano Supervisor Cassandra James. We’ll gather with Vallejo tenants, organizers, and community‑rooted leaders to deepen our collective push for the tenant protections Vallejo families deserve.
