Menlo Park Settles Housing Element Lawsuit
In 2012, as part of a coalition effort, Urban Habitat partnered with Public Advocates to settle a lawsuit with the City of Menlo Park. The City had failed to update its legally-mandated Housing Element since 1992 or to accommodate its share of the Bay Area’s affordable housing needs.
Key outcomes from the settlement included:
- Adoption of an affordable housing plan by early 2013.
- Rezoning sites in and around downtown to promote the development of affordable housing near jobs and transit.
- Provision of local funding for nonprofit housing developers.
