Local Transportation Officials Pressure BART on Airport Connector
OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Regional transportation officials are urging BART to resolve a federal civil rights complaint that threatens $70 million of funding for a proposed airport connector between Coliseum Station and Oakland International Airport.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission still supports building the $500,000 people mover to replace the existing bus line, said executive director Steve Hemminger.
The federal government may withdraw funds available under the American Recovery Act if they are not satisfied by March 5 that BART has done enough to address how construction will affect neighborhood of predominantly low-income minority residents.
BART director Carole Ward Allen has appealed for more time, saying the project is too close to the finish line to stop now.
The MTC will address the issue again on February 17.
